3 Tips to Get Better Grades Next Semester

The recent course registration process has got me thinking of ways of making my next semester better (even though final exams aren’t here yet). I have asked around and observed the habits of top-graders, and here are 3 common things that we can consider doing next semester:

1. Sit in front of the class

At the front, it is easy for you to listen to what is being presented and easy for you to seek clarification when the need arises. Compared to when you sit at the back, there will be that resistance when you want to ask your lecturers questions because it requires you to project your voice across the classroom, and you just don’t have the guts to do that don’t you?

2. Come to class as prepared as possible

Refer to the lesson plan and have a rough idea of what is going to be covered on a particular day. If you need to read, read; if there are assignments, do it (even when you know the lecturer is not going to grade your work). Be ready as much as possible. Doing so helps you retain whatever that is going to be covered on that day better. Trust me. No, trust the top students.

3. Don’t skip class unnecessarily

We all know well enough that we each have a few days to miss class before we get the warning letter and barred from exam. However, unless you are very confident that you won’t miss anything by not attending class, you should never do it ‘for fun’. If your past grades for quizzes and tests are poor, you should never skip class.  If there are instances where you can’t respond to questions posed by the lecturer, you should never skip class. If you always tell yourself, ‘it’s okay, I can try to understand this later’ in class many times, but you rarely follow-up with actions, you are not worthy to skip classes. If you care for your grades, that is. If not, just do as you please, Sir. Success needs sacrifices — so if you are not willing to sacrifice your sleep to attend classes, maybe you don’t deserve success? Wallahu A’lam.

All right, these are the 3 things I got from my high-achiever friends. The choice is yours!

To IIUM Smokers

I am not even going to touch on how smoking is bad for health etc. I am sure at this point, you are well aware of what you’re doing to yourselves. If you don’t – well sadly, judging by kinds of students I have met in this school, I am not that surprised if there are – try to read up on it, ok?

I just really wish you guys can clean up after yourselves. I mean, it is already one thing that you smoke in campus (yes, it is not allowed if you don’t know you ignorant pieces of meat), but littering the cigarette butts as well? How low can you people go?

There’s this invention which they have introduced to the global society called the rubbish bin, alternatively called trash can and waste container. You can read about it here. Civilised people dispose their trash (trash means waste materials which includes cigarette butts) in rubbish bin to keep the environment clean. You smokers should consider doing this, too!

It really frustrates me seeing the butts on the floor of the toilets, around Mahallahs and some parts of the university. Such an eye-sore, not to mention unhygienic. Maybe it is already a normal scene in Malaysia or whichever country you’re from, but it doesn’t mean at all that it is acceptable.

For the sake of Allah, if you call yourselves Muslims, do try best to act like one! You may think that littering is a small thing, but it’s actually a good representation of your faith and upbringing. If you can’t control your urge to smoke (already a sign of your weak Iman), the least you could do is to dispose them wastes properly isn’t it?

I am not saying that all smokers are litterbugs, but majority of the ones I have met are, and this post is directed to them. Trust me, I’ve tried talking some sense to some of them, but they’d reply me with a lot of meaningless cow feces which led me to writing this post here.

A Muslim shouldn’t wish bad things for his brothers so I won’t. So, I am just going to pray that Allah rewards your actions justly and teaches you in the best way possible, hard or soft I let Him decide. Amin.

Next: people who don’t know how to use the toilet.

5 ways to prepare for water supply disruption

In view of the recent water disruption incident which affected many Mahallahs (including mine!!), here are some pointers that you can consider to prepare in case this incident recurs in the future.

1. Store as much water in your room.

The moment you heard of or read the announcement of a possible disruption, quickly run to the toilet and fill up your pails and bottles and put them in your room. Invest in more pails if you need to. Remember to cover your pails so nasty insects won’t end up swimming there.

2. Buy big bottled water.

If you’re the kind that is just lazy and have money to spare, instead of filling your pails, you can just buy water in bottles. If you have even more money, pay someone to buy them for you and deliver straight to your room. Note that the moment water supply is cut, these big (1.5 litres) bottled drinking water will go out of stock very quickly like ‘goreng pisang panas’ (as my Malaysian friend would put it). So you either buy them early, or brace yourself to face the possible consequence.

3. Utilise the toilets at unaffected areas.

Based on my observation, the Mosque, Kuliahs and Sports Complex were not affected by the disruption. There are showers in the mosque and both sports complexes, you can shower there in the morning before lesson, if the situation really calls for it.

4. Overnight at a friends’ place

…if they are staying outside of and nearby IIUM. It helps if you are good friends them, otherwise, you need to shamelessly ask them if you can stay over at their place till the water issue has been resolved. If you need to, offer some favours in return. Negotiate. However, it is important to note that by doing this, you stand a chance to be judged by your peers as a spoilt-brat. Alternatively, you can try asking your lecturers.

5. IIUM River

Where else would be better than getting water from the main source itself, true? Haha!

Depending on your level of desperation, here are five things which you can consider in the future.

In all seriousness, I am sure if you think deeply, there are things that we can learn from this incident. I’ll let you figure that out on your own. Having said that, as I am writing this, many Mahallahs are still facing this problem, so I hope this problem will be resolved ASAP.

Salam Alaykum!

As you could’ve probably guessed, this page was made to serve as an online directory for anything IIUM-related. We wish to compile the links to as many IIUM-related websites and pages into one list that is accessible to all students, lecturers and anyone who are interested to find out more about the university.

Why are we doing this?

Having been in this university for quite some time, we realised that there are actually many IIUM online pages, official and non-official, that are available on the internet. They include Blogs, FB pages and groups and twitter accounts. Some of them that we’ve came across are very useful and  relevant, however, not known to many, especially the international students. So to make it easier and to facilitate flow of information for you and for me, we’ve taken the initiative to work this “project” on our own capacity.

What we aim to do is to build a reliable and an updated reference page that can direct users to the page that you need.

Definitely, our ability and knowledge is limited and we would appreciate as much help as possible from anyone. Therefore, do not hesitate to recommend us links to IIUM-related (clubs, societies, sports/interest groups) pages that you feel should be included in our list. If you think there is a better, more efficient way for us to do this, do send us your suggestions!  Feel free to drop us a message here or tweet us at @IIUMLinks. Alternatively, you may reach us via our e-mail iiumlinks@gmail.com.

Let’s do this! Bismillah!
May Allah see this as our collective effort to help others and also our effort to gain Allah’s Redha. Amin.
